Robert Von Zimmerman Architect and Artist circa 1924 to circa 1984 arrived in
Guatemala approximately 120 years after Frederic Catherwood, the Architect and Artist
whom had explored and produced drawings of "Views of Ancient Monuments". Robert
migrated from New York to Miami to Guatemala circa 1960.
I met Robert while searching for an art teacher for my two daughters Laura and
Susan whom visited me every summer. Once I saw Von Zimmerman's work, I was
astounded by his beautiful pagentry of the present day life and ceremonies of the blended
Mayan Cultural with the Spanish Catholic Religion. This combination produced an
awareness of mysticism with a beautiful devout presence of impressionism.
In Robert Von Zimmerman's own words, "I am reminded by the scenes of Manet
and Monet, as I witness the scenes of the Maya patterning themselves in a natural order
in the presence of nature clearly, restating the proper perspective of human values of
religious work and worship."
The work of Von Zimmerman through his pen and ink and watercolor creates an
architectural calligraphy expression of exuberance and vitality.
As Von Zimmerman performs his work, his quick and deft strokes captures the
moment of his own senses, as he perceives the scene at hand with originality and masterful
communication. His work is one of greatness, as his care free manner is alive, with motion,
and emotion.
